My daughter is out tonight, on her very first date!
Today was interesting....she had to work early. 8-2. She never works that early, ever. She has always been given a later shift. Anyway, at 2pm, I head over to the store to pick her up, and I'm waiting, and waiting. 2:25 rolls around, and she comes walking out, and I asked her what she was doing. She said that she had been talking to someone. The rest of the convo went like this:
Me - "Does someone have a name?"
Her - "Yeah......Harvey" (she had a grin on her face, the likes of nothing I'd ever seen before)
Me - "Harvey??"
Her - "Well, they call him Matt, too."
slight pause in there...
Her - "Mom, he asked me to go OUT to a movie tonight!!"
Me - "How old is he?"
Her - "Mom, don't get mad....he's 22."
Me - "22?"
Her - "Yeah, I told him I didn't know if I could, that I had to ask your permission first. He said that he would meet you, and dad, and follow any rules for curfew, too."
(me, thinking to self, oh yeah, that's for sure!)
We went to the bank to get money, and she said that she already had money. That she got it when she went out for lunch during her break. I asked - where did you go on break? Across to the pizza place.... with who? *giggle* "Harvey, mom!! And, guess what? He paid, too!"
So - the rest of the conversation was really open, and honest. Lot's of giggles on her side. She kept saying that she never thought anyone would ever ask her out. She's so much more mature than the boys that go to her school. She's also a lot taller than them.
We got home, and she chatted with him online for a while. I told her that if she really wanted to go out, she could, BUT, she had to go on a double date with her best friend, and the best friend's boyfriend. Her girlfriend said that they would definitely go out with them. (Her boyfriend is super protective over her, and all of her friends, and he's 19.) The guy that asked my daughter out agreed right away to the double date.
So, they agreed on a movie, and he came over to pick her up. Got out of the car, shook my hand, such a polite young man, soft spoken, very, very tall, and super cute. He's in college, which is a plus, too.
I had said all along, that once she got a job, or even once college started, that would be when she'd meet someone. And, here it is, a month after starting her job, she's out on her first date.
I'm sitting here, feeling happy, and excited for her. But, at the same time, I'm feeling sad, and unsure. I want her to grow up, and be happy, and enjoy life to the fullest. But, at the same time - I don't want to let go of the little girl. I know that I'm going to have to do that, because we have to give our children wings to fly. I just wish I could keep her wings clipped a little longer.....
*sigh* and *sigh* again.....
